Cartier descendant gets 8 years in prison for laundering $470 million through crypto

A federal court in New York has handed down an eight-year prison sentence to Maximilien de Hoop Cartier, a descendant of the famed French jewelry dynasty, for running an unlicensed over-the-counter cryptocurrency exchange that moved more than $470 million in drug proceeds from the United States to Colombia.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, Cartier had previously pleaded guilty to one count of operating an unlicensed money transmitting business and one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud. He was sentenced on Tuesday.

A network of shell companies disguised as tech firms

Prosecutors said Cartier built a sprawling laundering operation around U.S.-based shell companies and more than a dozen U.S. bank accounts. To keep those accounts open, he told financial institutions that the entities were software publishers and software developers. The reality was far less innocent. The shells served as conduits for drug money and other criminal proceeds, with Cartier producing forged contracts, fake invoices and fabricated records to make every transaction look legitimate to compliance teams.

The mechanics of the scheme followed a consistent pattern. Cartier received drug money in cryptocurrency, converted it into hard cash, deposited the dollars into the shell company accounts he controlled, and then moved the funds to other nodes of the laundering network. The cash was eventually pulled out in local currency in Colombia.

The case has been on prosecutors’ radar for years. The original charges in May 2024 named Cartier and three Colombian co-conspirators, with two additional Colombian nationals charged for conspiracy to import more than 100 kilograms of cocaine into the United States. Cartier was arrested in Miami, where he was allegedly coordinating with a Colombian drug cartel and laundering proceeds primarily through over-the-counter USDT trades.

$2.36 million in forfeiture and the 2021 seizure that almost worked

In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered Cartier to forfeit roughly $2.36 million, the amount representing the commissions he pocketed for running the laundering pipeline. The judge also ordered the forfeiture of specific bank accounts held in the names of the shell companies.

The sentencing closes a chapter that began long before the 2024 indictment. Back in April 2021, authorities seized about $937,000 in drug trafficking proceeds from Cartier’s shell company accounts. At the time, Cartier and his lawyers managed to recover part of that money by claiming the businesses had functioning anti-money laundering and know-your-customer procedures. Prosecutors say those claims and the supporting business records were fabricated. Cartier later admitted to federal agents that he had lied to banks about his role as a crypto exchange operator.

A wider crackdown on crypto-linked crime

The Cartier sentencing lands as law enforcement around the world steps up pressure on crypto-related criminal networks. In France, prosecutors have charged 88 individuals, including 10 minors, in connection with a series of kidnappings and extortions targeting cryptocurrency holders. Those charges relate to 12 separate ongoing judicial investigations.

The contrast is telling. On one side, sophisticated laundering operations using shell entities and OTC desks. On the other, brutal physical attacks aimed at forcing victims to hand over their wallets. Both reflect the same underlying reality: as crypto continues to attract serious money, it also continues to attract serious crime, and the legal response is sharpening.
